PNE vandals branded as 'idiots'

Preston North End yobs left a trail of destruction during their side's derby day defeat at Burnley.

A small group of supporters among 3,000 away fans ripped seats out of the away end at Turf Moor.

This picture, taken by a PNE fan, shows the wooden seats in the Cricket Field stand ripped from their hinges and left littered on the floor of the stand during the 3-1 defeat.

Richard Shelliker, chairman of the PNE Official Supporters' Club, branded those responsible as "mindless idiots." He said: "You go to the match, you get disappointed but you move on, you don't start ripping seats out. It's only a few, a mindless minority."

One Ribbleton-based PNE fan said: "These idiots are not Preston supporters and should be banned from entering a football ground again.
"I hope the CCTV will catch them and let Burnley FC and the police take action."

And a Burnley fan who left a comment on a supporters' website said: "Just wondering why people have to resort to destroying things because their team has lost a game."

It is not yet clear whether the damage will be repaired in time for tonight's Championship match against Watford.

A spokesman for Burnley FC said the club would not comment on the damage.

Ben Rhodes, general manager at Preston North End, said the club had not yet been contacted by Burnley but added: "We will assist in whatever action they want to take."

I can't believe that some supporters did this! Can they not remember what Leeds fans & players did at Deepdale the other season? I can't believe someone who calls themselves Preston fans can lower themselves to this level! It's mindless people like that who will give are wonderful club a bad name!

They look very old seats, perhaps they broke due to age when people stood on them to see the game, anyway looks like they needed replacing.

Mindless, stupid, idiotic all words which describe them, but in the long run will have no effect. Penalties are not harsh enough - unfortunately we cannot do what was once suggested in a famous Not the 9 O'clock News sketch where they "should have their ........cut off", but they should receive 10 year bans from ALL sports grounds, have to report to Police Station at 3 pm every Saturaday and have their passport removed for the same period.

Perhaps then, if they find their own movement restricted, they can't go on holidays abroad and cause more shame on our town and country and they have to explain to any future friends or partners why they have to refuse such social events they may just think about their actions before bringing shame to the TRUE North End supporter.

Very sensible solutions. I wish that the authorities would take note.

"A spokesman for Burnley FC said the club would not comment on the damage" - typical bury the head in the sand attitude and hope it goes away from football. No doubt worried about a reaction at the next game.

How about threatening to cut allocation of away tickets or banning away fans altogether. That would focus the idiots' minds. Here's an idea, maybe they could keep fans in after the enxt game and then escort them out chacking for damage on the way. Here's another why take names of seat holders. Although fans inevitably swap seats, tickets etc. it would focus the mind on a fan to make sure 'his' seat was undamaged and he would be more likely to report another person for smashing his seat if it meant him getting banned.

Cheers Scrooge - there are many like minded, but we live in a society where people are not asked to be responsible for their own actions and how those may affect others.

Worker Bee - I see your point, but there are a number of problems - firstly it was unreserved seating - that said I looked at the areas and took myself and my children away from where the 'idiots' were, but why punish those, the majority, who were well behaved and just go to support their team, as that won't affect the 'idiots' as they will just find elsewhere to reak havoc.

Secondly - even if the seast were allocated, what should I do if I've been given seats amongst the 'idiots' and then others come in demanding to be with their mates? Do I say no and put my children in danger? Do I watch that seat for the rest of the game in fear that I might get prosecuted for somebody else's actions?

What is needed is proper deterrents for those who commit the offences.

With today's technology we should be able to identify and arrest, charge and then make suitable punishments as those described above - the law should not preventing the law-abiding going about their daily activities, but should severely punish those who seem to believe that they are owed a living and should be able to do what they want.

We all owe a duty of care to each other, we should be responsible and determine how our actions may affect others, but if someone's actions do breach that duty of care we should then stop the political correctness that is paralysing a lawful society by protecting those that commit the offences.

nothing would focus these idiots minds. so draconian measures penalising decent fans is never the answer. 1 policenan man spotted the damage and took some action. at some away grounds stewards all stand at the front and have little presence at the back of stands. sometimes the opposite happens a fan may do something daft or silly and gets treated as if if is a terrorist[eg at plymouth in april. its not easy for stewards i know but the treatment/control of away fans varies fron the brilliant to disgusting.

Good points G. Maybe a better stewarding or police presence is the answer coupled with proper punishment for offenders ie banning from matches as you say. What doesn't help is football clubs refusing to join the debate, pretending trouble doesn't happen and hoping, head in sand, that it will go away.

One other thing, why the 3pm kick off when it is always 1pm at Deepdale derbies?

These are not proper fans, they are disgrace to the club.

If they were caught they should be banned from grounds and made to pay for the repair of the seats.

The People who did this are not true fans, I follow Wolves Home & away & enjoy a good drink & good banter with opposition fans. I have made some good friends following Wolves & always make sure i meet up with them when we play them. That includes Burnley, PNE, even Cardiff & our Rivals WBA. Why do idiots need to cause trouble is insane
