A gang of four children aged between 11 and 13 spent an entire weekend wrecking a Lancashire business, causing £37,000 worth of damage.
The young thugs wrote off businessman Robert Cairns' work vans and forced him out of his premises.

They also destroyed his personal possessions, his children's toys and photographs of his war hero father.

Then they plundered family heirlooms being stored as his mother lay seriously ill in hospital. She died before her son had to break the devastating news to her about what had happened.

Now, as part of the four youths' community punishment, Mr Cairns must sit in a room with the very same boys so that they can get a feel for the impact their crimes have had on him.

The parents of the yobs also have to pay Mr Cairns £350 compensation – a tiny fraction of what he has lost.

The father-of-three built up his Car Fix vehicle painting and repair business over eight years and had been based at the largely derelict Club Street Mill in Bamber Bridge for the last four years.

But when a local tearaway broke into the mill and dropped through the mezzanine roof into Mr Cairns' unit one weekend in September, all his hard work was about to be ruined.

Mr Cairns, 48, said: "The gang spent two days over a weekend throwing paint around and smashing up anything in sight. They plugged in a grinder and set about everything within reach of the flex.

"The first lad had such a good time on the Saturday, he brought his three mates back with him on the Sunday.

"I had to let my young employee go and the unit go because I couldn't continue to pay the rent. The business will recover, but the insurance won't cover it."

At South Ribble Magistrates Court, the four youths were all given nine-month youth referral contracts.

Their victim added: "Now I'm expected to go to court as part of their reparation.

"I get to sit there face-to-face with these boys and say how I feel and how this has affected me – all so they can get a feel for the gravity of what they've done to me."

The mother of two of the boys, from Leyland, said: "They've done wrong and have to pay for what they've done. What's happened has happened and that's all I'll say."

£37,000 of damage done by these mindless thugs, yet only £350 compensation between four families?????? That`s £87.50 each.
AM I MISSING SOMETHING? Is someone in the judiciary having a laugh?

A refferal contract can be anything from 3 to 12 months, depending upon the seriousness of the crime.
A mere 9 month order, handed down by South Ribble would therefore suggest (to me - anyway) that this crime isn`t judged to be all that serious.
Try telling that to the man who has lost his business and to the young chap who has lost his job.

Is it just me - or does anyone else despair?

These kids' mother sounds really bothered about what her offspring have done... NOT!!! I hope next time they wreck her house, throw paint allover etc. It'll probably be rented accommodation & she'll just move to a next place to wreck!! We need boot camps NOW to stop ferral kids wrecking this s***hole of a country, to stop gang culture & innocents being killed, will it happen? Unfortunately not!

The boys should be forced to bring along their posessions (XBox, Playstation, ipods, etc) to the meeting and the victim allowed to destroy them however he pleases! - the boys might then get some idea of how it feels.

Name and shame these little scroats parents in the LEP and I bet their response would be totally different! It really annoys me that crimes like these can be committed by young kids and their names are not made public and in cases like these, their parents should be made to feel embarrassed, ashamed and humiliated so publish their names!

It is no surprise thatBritain is fast becoming the worst place in the world. A can't care less government breeds a can't care less society. If these kids were named and their pictures put in the paper, society would take natural justice, and they wouldn't offend again. The council should make this sort of family homeless until they learn to control their children, and benefits withdrawn. Their is no deterrent to crime left, unless of course you do 34 miles an hour on an empty road. Then you are a real criminal.

Robert, you are obviously a hard working man trying you best to earn an honest living. Not only was the situation you found yourself after the damaged caused by these boys, only then to have the unpleasant task of terminating you young assistant.

This brief note is not about those boys who caused the damage it is about you and your family, I am sure you will find the strength to overcome this extremely hard time, the very best of Luck to you.
