Detectives have appealed for information after a man was assaulted and robbed.
The man was walking home from Preston city centre after failing to get a taxi at around 12.50am on September 3.

At the junction of Ribbleton Lane and St Mary's Street in Deepdale, he was approached by a cyclist who started verbally abusing him.

The victim then walked down St Mary's Street where he was propositioned by a prostitute. He was followed by the man on the bike.

Fearing he was going to be attacked the victim punched the cyclist in the face and chased him down the road.

A second man then appeared and struck the victim on the back of the head with an object, knocking him unconscious.

The victim woke up in the middle of the road.

Det Sgt John Crichton said:" The victim awoke to find his wallet and mobile phone had been stolen. The man managed to flag down a police patrol. We would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact us."

Anyone with information should call police on 01772 203203 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Sounds to me as though the taxi industry needs a shake up. It should be possible to get a cab 24/7 as in most North American towns. Surely this demonstrates an opportunity for new entrants to serve that niche market, an opportunity that Council needs to encourage.
