A supermarket chain has served up a Lancashire Day boost by recognising the county's traditional boundaries.
Events are taking place across the county today to celebrate everything which is great about Lancashire and to promote its historic boundaries.

The Friends of Real Lancashire (FORL) has long campaigned for the recognition of the county before new administrative areas were introduced in 1974.

Supermarket giants Tesco and Sainsbury's have changed the addresses of all their stores in Liverpool and Manchester to state they are in Lancashire.

Chris Dawson FORL chairman, said: "It is good because the more people who use traditional county addresses, the more people will recognise the true county identity, rather than some of the fake counties which were invented in 1974."

The first Lancashire Day took place in 1995 to mark the date in 1295 when elected representatives were first called to Westminster by King Edward I.

In Preston a Proclamation will be read by the city's town crier Mike Chapman next to the obelisk, in the Flag Market, at 2pm followed by a series of events around the city.

In Garstang it will be read at Market Cross at 11am and in Carnforth it will be at the War Memorial at 12pm.

In Lancaster it will take place on the steps of the City Museum at 3pm and there will also be a range of live music and entertainment across the county.

Folk band Trouble at' Mill will provide entertainment at the Ashlar Suite at Preston Masonic Hall, in Saul Street, from 7pm and tickets can be bought by calling 07961 924728.

The Museum of Lancashire, in Stanley Street, Preston, will host a hot pot supper and entertainment evening by Pits, Mills, Factories and Clogs and there will be a toast at 9pm.

For more information call 01772 257026.

There will be myths and legends event at Alston Hall, in Longridge, from 11am until 4pm and costs £36.60 including lunch, which can be booked in advance by calling 01772 784661.

At Clitheroe Castle there will be a Lancashire dialect quiz and recordings playing of people's memories and poems, as well as Lancashire dialect.

Morecambe Visitor Information Centre and Lancaster Visitor Information Centre are hosting events through the day.

The Bitter Suite, in Fylde Road, will hold an event on Friday evening and there Nice Bar and Cafe in the Storey Creative Industries Centre, in Lancaster will have a special menu.

Perhaps the LEP could also give Lancashire Day a boost by recognising the true boundaries of the county of Lancashire, as established in 1182 and reaffirmed in the 1974 local government act and apologising for the nosense story it ran mocking the secretary of state for culture when he rightly said that a move to Manchester would keep the National Football Museum in Lancashire? Or is that too much to hope? Until then, you should at least refrain from calling Monday's big soccer match a 'Lancashire derby' as, by your own rules, it isn't.

#1 You're gonna have to explain this to me. What difference does your argument about the boundary make to a Preston vs Blackpool Derby? Neither falls outside of any Lancashire boundary. Or am I missing something?

What he means his, Blackpool is no longer marked on the map of Lancs the same as Blackburn and Darwen, i have watched sky news many a time and when ever an incident is reported in Lancs Blackpool and Blackburn and Darwen are not represented as Lancs(never mind Manchester or Liverpool) this is due to Blackpool and Blackburn and Darwen becoming unitary authourities, sky news and news 24 only show the county council boundaries, ive complained to them in the past i think the real county boundaries should be used from the river mersey in the south all the way up to Coniston and Hawkshead in the north.

If we all took time, and complained to things like sky news and news 24, and even Granada reports and BBC North West news then maybe the true county of Lancs will be shown in its true form, the true county of Lancs as a population of around 6 million, a voice that should be heard.

@#2 & #3 Gary Holland is right, according to the 'Lancashire' Evening Post 'Lancashire' only covers areas served by Lancashire County Council, therefore Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen are no longer defined as Lancashire. Heaven knows what this newspaper will do when Lancashire County Council is finally abolished - change its name, presumably. Or maybe just fold.
