A man had to be helped from his smoke-filled flat by a neighbour after clothes in a wardrobe caught on fire.
The neighbour spotted smoke coming from a window of the property at Lychgate on Church Street in Preston city centre at 8.25pm on Sunday and went in to drag out the man who was on crutches.

Crew manager Chris Wales, of Preston fire service, said: "There was no smoke alarm fitted, so if his neighbour had not seen the smoke he might not have noticed until much later."

He added an investigation was taking place into the cause of the fire which is believed to have been started by a discarded cigarette.
