A householder leapt into action and seized back his mountain bike, a court heard.
Darren Collins,37, of Preston Street, Kirkham had pleaded not guilty to theft and causing damage but was found guilty of both offences after a trial in his absence.

Collins admitted failing to answer bail.

He was given a 12 month conditional d
ischarge and told to pay £50 costs by Blackpool Magistrates.

Peter Bardsley, prosecuting, said that at 5.30pm on May 18, 2006, bike owner Stuart Thomas was looking out of a window at home in St Albans Road, St Annes, when he saw Collins enter the garden and wheel off his mountain bike.

He went on: "Mr Thomas ran out of his house and grabbed the bike back. He then saw Collins throw a stone smashing a neighbour's window."

Malcolm Cartwright, defending, said his client took medication for depression and had spent two spells in a psychiatric unit.

On the day of the trial Collins was unable to get out of bed to attend court.
