Six football fans have been fined for smoking at Preston North End's Deepdale stadium since the start of the year, new figures have revealed.
The fans were given £50 fixed penalty notices between January and now by council enforcement officers for flouting anti-smoking laws.

Preston Council warned last year that it was set to clamp down on the practice.

Richard Shelliker, of the official PNE supporters club, who sits in the Sir Tom Finney stand at Deepdale, said he has seen no evidence of fans smoking in the ground.

6 fines in 11 months is not bad, why don't the LEP get states for other grounds and compare them. This article makes it sound a bad situation and fans revolting, but they not, 6 fans out of aproximately 300,000 fans. I don't smoke, but I think that the club should try and meet the fans half way on the issue, because it is costing the club.

The smoking ban was meant to apply to closed spaces - the inside of restaurants etc. How the heck is smoking in, effectivel, an open-air football venue risking anyone's health? Same applies to a railway station platform - it's just more social engineering from the most fascistic government this country has ever known. Smoking should be brought back in pubs, clubs and bingo halls before those industries disappear for good.

Laughable the smoking ban at times!

I have to endure idiots smoking in a fire exit on Lancaster Rd where Great times is. When I asked the council about it they said it was fine though!

Where does it make it sound bad. It merely states the fact it looks like to me.

They could have issued 6 fines in 10 minutes if they looked hard enough. Plenty of places at PNE for a smoke.

Go into the toilets at half time and you will see just how many are smoking.

What happened to FREEDOM in this stupid country?
Council officials should have no rights to prevent anyone smoking in the open air.
I don't smoke, but this council fascism has to stop.

#8 - what about my freedom not to have to sit next to someone smoking?

Mr Osato - total rubbish. Do you think the smoke just magically disappears in the open air? I agree that that there is a big difference in being enclosed or in a partially open area when the smoker is 15 yards away - but if they are right next to you there is no difference at all.

Political correctness gone mad.

If I want to give myself cancer and increase the chances of the others around me catching cancer, why can't I? I thought it was a free country, where I can kill myself and those around me? Its time this 'nanny state' stopped interfering with my personal mission to spread cancer.

They'll be telling me I can't drink myself to sclerosis, via random acts of violence next - ruddy council facists.

Its political correctness gone mad in a nanny state of health and safety interfering with our lives through political correctness gone mad through health and safety nanny state etc etc (insert further Daily Mail/Sun coined phrases here)
