A councillor is threatening to block Big-Brother-style CCTV cameras from spying on his house – by letting his trees grow.
Coun Albert Richardson claims the surveillance cameras near his home on Ribbleton Avenue can monitor visitors to his house and are invading neighbours' privacy.

Coun Richardson backed the cameras when they were set up almost 18 months ago – but is now fuming as one has been erected close to his front door.

He said: "I didn't expect one to go up where it has gone up. There are people watching me coming and going outside my house.

"I am not too pleased about it at all so I'm letting my trees grow."

But in April 2007 when the new cameras were announced, Coun Richardson told The Evening Post: "I live right in the middle of St Matthew's ward so I welcome this.

"It is sad to say it because no-one likes being spied on by these cameras, but when I think of the vulnerable people who live in St Matthew's ward, I do think this is needed."

Insp June Chessell, of Lancashire Police, said: "The CCTV cameras were installed following lengthy public consultations.

"The cameras have been a useful tool in helping crime reduction and feedback from residents has been very positive."

So it's ok for the rest of the population to have cameras probing every aspect of our lives, but Councillor Richardson is against them now they point at his door!

Lets Start a campaign to have the Trees cut down in his garden lol. To be honest thou, I am sure there is a law on were the camera's can point. If you install your own, they can't over look a neighbours garden without permission and they can't over look a public highway/path. So I am sure he has a case about them looking at his house.

I read recently that, "The average Londoner might be monitored by 300 CCTV cameras a day. They are not going to be switched off, merely made more sophisticated."

This would include, of course, a Londoner such as George Orwell, were he still alive. 'Tis ironic, n'est ce pas?

He wanted a camera round there, he got one.
He shouldn't complain just because its near his house.

Shows that councillers need to think about the consequences before they act.
Hopefully he'll think more carefully in future about how the decisions of the council affect people, & how they apply to councillers too!

Also worrying is the fact that Coun Richardson didn't even have the common sense to hide his grotesque hypocrisy with a 'no comment' when the LEP reporter came calling.

Will Councillor Richardson now be campaigning to have cctv cameras removed from residential areas, or just the one near HIS house? I wouldn't mind having it moved up the road near to my house, but then why should I, I have nothing to hide.
