He was a callous dictator known for purging opponents and imposing a brutal regime leading to the deaths of millions of people.
But former Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin lives on today – as leader of Preston City Council.

At least that's what the leader of the opposition reckons.
Labour group leader John Collins made his controversial remark after he was beaten by two votes by Ken Hudson in the race for the council leadership.

Coun Collins, who had a book entitled Young Stalin in front of him, said he was angry at Coun Hudson revealing his new six-person cabinet, including changes to portfolios, without speaking to him beforehand.

In a fiery council meeting, he said: "What has been done today is absolutely outrageous. There's been no consultation of this in the leaders' forum. Isn't the resemblance of this bearded man (Coun Hudson) the same as Stalin?"

Coun Hudson claimed he could not give out the information before he had been re-elected leader.

He later laughed off the resemblance to Joseph Stalin – and preferred to be compared to Joseph from the hit musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!

He told the Evening Post: "I feel more like another Joseph – one who had a dream. That is that Preston becomes the third city in the North West and Tithebarn regneration goes through successfully.

"He did compare me as I have a beard, but most people compare me with Amos Brearly from Emmerdale. John just descended into a child who spat his dummy out – Stalin is more a reflection on him."

Coun Collins said he was particularly annoyed at "coalition members" chairing committees monitoring the authority.

The new cabinet consists of: Coun Ken Hudson (leader), Coun Eric Fazackerley (resources and deputy leader), Coun Neil Cartwright (development), Coun Anthony Gornall (environment and regeneration), Coun Christine Thomas (leisure, culture and environmental services) and Coun Kate Calder (community safety and engagement).

Labour are noticeably churlish and bitchy in defeat. What's so strange about Coun Hudson's appearance? Retro is cool. Mutton chop sideboards will surely be back in fashion any day now.

And what a strange comparison with Stalin, a former General Secretary of the COMMUNIST Party. Hardly a Conservative, eh what?

More like Old Labour. Or Coun Collins.

The Conservative cabinet is hand picked by the leader unlike the Labour group who elect their executive. The Tory leader has not just re-shuffled his cabinet, he has re-shuffled the entire make-up and responsibilities of the protfolio's three times in 12 months!
This is designed to confuse officers, the opposition and the public to the point where the trail of accountability becomes impossible to trace.
It's a hard-line dictatorial regime, just like Stalin's!

Well, seeing as you've mentioned it: "...designed to confuse officers, the Opposition and the public to the point where the trail of accountability becomes impossible to trace..."

This is a Labour tactic, isn't it? Why else do you think they employed Alastair Campbell. Why do you think they've remained in power for so long.

And now he's gone, why do you think Labour are struggling and are rock-bottom in the polls. It's because the spin has spun and the top has stopped.

Even at local level, you can hardly criticise the Conservatives for employing Labour tactics - especially as those tactics have worked so well for so long.

As for Stalin, he was undeniably strong-willed, but at least he helped to scupper the Nazis.

Stalin's troops were on the brink of starvation and collapse when the Nazi's surrendered, the end of the war came not a moment too soon for them. That's what happens in a centralised state with an idiosyncratic leader, bit like PCC at the moment, thanks to (ironically) the "Liberal-Democrats"!!!

Just goes to show Rolly that nobody likes you anymore, pacts formed against you because of your PATHETIC policies over the past 10 years. Losing in Brooky, who'da thunkit. lol.

I think Coun Hudson can afford to ignore Coun Collins and his cheap jibe.

As Joe Stalin once said: "You do not lament the loss of hair of one who has been beheaded."

Randel,

Do you not think that Councillors like yourself Martyn should comment direct to the media when discussing other City Councillors and also calling the leader of YOUR council "idiosyncratic" a little risky..... rather than posting on LEP forums....

You have to admit you didn`t think that you would loose such a safe seat as Brookfield did you??? Or did you think that you all had the god given right to every seat you already have.....

Eric Cartman,

No Randel, they're not that sure of themselves to thnk they have a God given right to any seat.

They just think they have a God given right to seats in working class and poor areas. Because they thought the residents can't think for themselves and would just follow the 'norm' and vote Labour. lol.
