People in charge of town hall purse strings have been shortlisted for a national award.
Finance chiefs at Preston Council have been recognised for their partnership work with Fylde Council.

They are shortlisted in the finance category in the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) awards.

Under the agreement, which started a year ago, Preston Council provides financial management and strategic advice services to Fylde.

Preston council leader Coun Ken Hudson said: "The arrangement has worked well for both councils.

"Cost and efficiency savings have been made by both, and it represents the best use of resources for both sets of taxpayers.

Before the scheme Fylde Council faced financial resourcing problems and was unable to replace senior managers in its finance department.

Coun John Coombes, leader of Fylde Council, said: "All members of Fylde Council have appreciated the vastly improved financial analysis of the Fylde Council budget situation."

I'm no fan of the Tories but I wonder if this improvement would have happened if Labour were still in control of Preston council. Probably not.

What will be written on the 'award' certificate? - "I closed down 2 swimming baths, a handful of public conveniences, and any other leisure facility you can think of?" I know the baths have been 'saved', but their futures look grim. Well done Cllr Coombes.

Comment 1 - Cumbrian cowboy. Are you related to the Cumbrian space cowboy Councillor Albert Richardson?

I think perhaps Cumbrian cowboy needs to get his facts right.

The improvement is not in Preston Council. The improvement relates to Flyde Council - which has been consersvative controlled for many years i.e. it was Conservative Councillors who created the mess in Fylde and Preston Officers - who were appointed by a Labour administartion - who have had to sort the problem out.
