Punters enjoying the switch on of Preston's Christmas lights have said the event was a big improvement on last year's celebrations.
An estimated 5,000 fans packed the Flag Market to enjoy Wednesday night's extravaganza.

Kate Stewart, 26, from Ashton, Preston, was at the event with daughter Ella, six.

She said: "It has got a really good atmosphere and I would say it is better than last year. They should have more things like this."

Darrell Shaw, 20, from Grange, Preston, said: "There are a few more stalls and more things to keep the kids entertained.

"They have made a good effort with it, it is a big difference to what it normally looks like down here."

Lindsay Jennis, 38, from Preston, was with her husband Dean, also 38, and their daughters Lauren, nine, Kelsey, 13 and Leonie, 10.

She said: "It is nice. I think the line-up is good because they are all the same sort of thing, it is all like High School Musical and all the kids are into that."

Martin White, 48, from Ribbleton, was with his partner Pat Woodfine, 47. He said: "They could do with a few more things like this to get more people coming in."

The stars of the switch-on were united in their praise for the city.

Girlband Velvet Kiss told the Evening Post the crowd was "amazing" and that the event was one of the highlights of their career so far.

Group member Diva said: "We are used to clubs and universities and this was all outdoors and families and it was really nice, it was great."

Asked to describe the highlight of her pop career, former Atomic Kitten Natasha Hamilton told fans: "Apart from being here tonight of course, we were here a few years back and it absolutely lashed down and everyone got soaked but a big thumbs up to everyone who stayed then. That was a great night."

PNE's Sean St Ledger also delighted the watching masses by reliving his team's 3-1 away victory over Blackpool.

He said: "Winning a football match is the best feeling in the world and beating your local rivals the donkey lashers, is great."

He said if he could be any player in the world, he would be David Beckham.

The final word went to Sean, from X Factor finalists Same Difference. He told the crowd pop mogul and X Factor judge Simon Cowell had given them a record deal.

What a load of rubbish, Whoever is in charge of organising this event year in and year out should be SACKED !!!. Every year I walk away dissapointed. Rock FM, probably THE worst radio station avalible at the moment couldn't entertain themselves let alone a crowd. The 50 year old drag queen singing 9-5, poor sound quality all the way through. Just rubbish.....but on a happier note, the dance off with santa did get me in the Xmas spirt, just about....Come on Preston we deserve better celeb's switching on our lights....NOT THE D-LIST we have to put up with every year.

Flyin_high I suggest you don't attend next year. Perhaps you are only happy when you are moaning. I thought the fireworks were great and the entertainment was absolutely appropriate - well done to the organisers.

Flyin_high you sound a right boring f@rt who listens to radio 4 or some $h!t like that, do us all a favour and stop commenting on modern day entertainment as rubbish, Adam Catterall is probably one of the best dj's in this country and Rock FM is a modern day radio station. P.S - Quality comment by Sean St Ledger about beating the Donkey Lashers Brilliant!!!!!!!!!

KEV...Rock FM is a modern as the days of pirate radio! I suggest you listen to Radio 1 where they don't play the same Basshunter tune 20 times an hour and don't have DJ's who where pulled from a wedding reception. I remember a few years ago when Century FM held the switch on.....more proffesional than the tripe of Rock FM

I thought Last night's switch on was great fun! Brill entertainment, the kids were kept happy, and thats what the spirit of christmas is about. The celebs were great, at the end of the day, it's about people having a good time, they dont need to be A Lists to provide good entertainment.

Rock FM did a great job, and just for facts- They afren't owned by EMAP so get your facts right!! And If you don't like it, stay at home SCROOGE!

5000 people is a great turnout so aside from whoever was performing lets be happy about that. And the lights look much improved this year too. If the children and families enjoyed it then that's the main thing on this sort of occasion!
