Furious cabbies will stage a full-day's strike on Monday after branding parking bay crisis talks a "waste of time."
Taxi drivers will also carry out a rolling protest through the city, after failing to reach an agreement with Virgin Trains over plans to limit the number taxi rank spaces at the railway station to just 12.

Earlier this month Hackney cab drivers brought the city to a standstill with a slow rolling protest, and left commuters stranded at the station.

Talks aimed at resolving the row collapsed yesterday – with taxi bosses cliaming their livelihoods will be hit and the city centre permanently congested if the plans are allowed to go ahead.

Charlie Oakes, chairman of the Bolton, Bury, and Preston Hackney Carriage Association, said: "We attended a meeting with Virgin Rail and representatives from the city council. It was not fruitful.

"They think 12 cabs is quite adequate and do not care about the passengers.I will recommend a slow protest drive through the city centre and an all day strike, and then increasing it to Friday and Saturday nights."

A spokesman for Virgin Trains said: "We are happy to confirm we are definitely going through with 12 spaces for taxis.

"We are looking into the possibility of another location from which taxis could be called forward, but at the moment we are looking for a location.

"Work starts on June 9 – we are going to start enforcing it before then so we are ready for the start of the week."

"Furious cabbies" can't get their own way with Virgin and are to stage another rolling protest to punish Preston motorists who will then be even more furious than the cabbies.

Black cab drivers think that Preston revolves around them. The traffic police should be out in force on Monday handing out tickets for obstruction.

Motorists should not have to suffer over this. The dispute is between the cab drivers and Virgin trains. Leave the rest of us out of it.

The cabbies should try and get the public on their side. If they cause disruption, it doesn't need to be said that that they'll make more enemies than freinds and supporters.

#2: Exactly right.

Deliberate disruption in Preston city centre is about as welcome as a bacon sandwich in Riyadh high street.

And the striking cabbies are simply shooting themselves in the foot. Private hire will be happy to take over all the black cab customers.

Virgin are unsuccessfully trying to reason with black cab drivers who are furious at the 12-cab rule and are determined to jam the city centre.

The simple solution is to tell the black cabs to ply their trade elsewhere. Less black cabs = less congestion.

Just install a line of 12 phone booths on the platform ramp so passengers can call private hire firms for free and be picked up a few minutes later.

Better service, and cheaper too.
