A new park and ride site could be created at a busy Lancashire station.
Council officials are looking into merging two car parks next to Leyland railway station to create a single new facility.

South Ribble Council owns a car park at Station Approach and train operator Northern Rail has a 60-space free car park. Now discussions are taking place to turn the two sites into long-stay pay and display car parks with new spaces created to cope with demand from passengers.

The council also hopes to apply for external funding to improve the facilities at the two stations, from the European-funded Civitas initiative.

>> Park and ride farce continues
>> Search continues for park and ride zone

Coun Jim Breakell, cabinet member for street scene services at South Ribble Council, said: "We are keen to find a way to improve car parking facilities at Leyland railway station, which we hope would provide an incentive for people to park and ride.

"We are currently investigating whether it would be possible to take over the management of Northern Rail's car park. If this went ahead, we would look to obtain external funding that could be spent on improving and updating car parking facilities at the station."

More spaces would also take the pressure off residents in nearby Moss Lane and Bow Brook Road, who complain about station users parking outside their homes. Charges were introduced at Station Approach in 2004 following a review of car parking.

very concerned,

i wish srbc would stop taking everyone for fools
they dont want to take over this car park for the benifit of users or residents
they want to take over so they can turn this one last free car park into a pay and display
they are annoyed that 60 free spaces are provided andthey are not making any money from it at all
maybee if they charged their overpaid staff to park at civic center then there would be spaces for the public to park when we attend on council buisnes

many small traders in leyland are suffering since srbc imposed pay and display and double yellows in town center, the ones who shout that they are not effected are specialist sellers like the wool/knitting woman inside leyland market........come on shut up mrs you have no competition in leyland of course your buisnes isnt effected, leyland is nothing more than estate agents fst food and supermarkets
its a shame the council is more interested in making money from theese traders than keeping leyland great
shame on you srbc
but then most of you dont even live here do you so why should you care

great what are people going to do? if they have any sense they will avoid the park and ride, and park on the neighbouring housing estates, nice thinking SRBC, create a problem elsewhere.

There was me thinking how convenient it was to park for free and travel by train to Manchester, Liverpool etc.

Well done SRBC, you've proved yourself morons again.

chops,

Their logic to create more Park and Ride spaces to free up residents streets is flawed at best, utterly moronic at worst!
Surely forcing people to pay will only mean they will find somewhere else to park for free.
What about providing some facilities to allow people to store their pedal bikes securely?
Oh I forgot, that wouldn't bring any revenue in would it?
