If you think you may be at risk of flooding, here is some advice from North West Environment Agency area manager John Collins:
* Check www.environment-agency.gov.uk, where information is updated every 15 minutes.

* Check for the level of the warning in your area:

1st level – flood watch – Flooding of low lying land and roads is expected.

2nd level – flood warning – flooding of homes and businesses are expected – advice is for people to act now.

3rd level – (none currently in place in the region) severe flood warning – Act now! Severe flooding is expected with extreme danger to life and property.

* Call floodline 0845 9881188

* Listen to your local radio for updates

* In the event of a flood warning in your area: gather any essential items and put them in a high place or upstairs

* Make sure every person and any pets are upstairs

* Avoid walking or driving through water and if you do come into contact with it wash your hands

* If you have flood protection products – a flood gate or air brink covers – use them

* Put plugs in your sink

* Check on elderly relatives or neighbours by phone.

* Don't drive unless it is essential

* Sit tight and listen for updates

* For traffic and travel advice, stay in touch with your local media, especially lep.co.uk
