550 drivers recruited to trial in-car speed limit equipment

Motorists in Lancashire will soon be testing controversial in-car technology which warns them of changes in the speed limit.

Lancashire County Council has signed up 550 volunteers to try out the intelligent speed adaptation devices in their vehicles.

The equipment warns drivers when they enter an area with a different speed limit and of hazards on the road ahead, but has drawn criticism from the Association of British Drivers, which claims that the technology could be used to directly control vehicles' speed.

Vali Birang, head of traffic and safety at LCC, said: "It is hoped that by making drivers more aware, they will drive within speed limits and ultimately reduce the number of potential crashes and deaths on the road.

"The 550 volunteers for the project have now been recruited and a 'digital speed map' of Lancashire is currently being developed."

Coun Keith Young, highways and transport chief, added: "We are trialing this new technology to see if it achieves a reduction in the number of crashes and fatalities on the roads."
