'Get rid of the Gatsos'

Published Date: 19 July 2008
Cash pumped into an army of speed cameras on Lancashire's roads is being wasted and should be spent on other road safety schemes.
That was the damning verdict of the city's council chief Ken Hudson who believes 20mph and speed indicator devices (SIDs) are better value than cash-hungry Gatsos.

Last year Lancashire's speed cameras snared £3.4m from drivers. The cash goes straight to the Government.

Partnership bosses say other safety measures are not part of their remit.

But Coun Hudson said: "To be perfectly honest, you see speed cameras, everyone knows where they are and people know to slow down.

"You would get the same response using SIDs, you would slow the traffic down and you don't get the rage you get from reasonably law-abiding motorists.

"Clearly speed kills and we don't want to encourage that but we want some measures that slow people down without hitting them with a £60 fine. We would like to see more of the money going to 20mph zones, it should be spent in residential areas."

A number of SID devices – which tell drivers how fast they are going and cost around £4,000 – are already on Lancashire's roads and have been paid for by district councils, parish councils or groups of residents.

County Hall has funded traffic calming schemes, while Preston Council has used grant money to buy 20mph signs in some areas.

Coun Hudson's comments come in the wake of Tory-controlled Swindon Council's decision to stop pumping cash into their road safety partnership and spend it on road safety measures instead.

Lancashire currently has 345 fixed speed cameras — the third highest number in the country.

Five years ago there were 63.

Kat Whitemoss, of the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety, said there are no plans to abandon speed cameras in Lancashire.

She added: "Of the money we get back a proportion of it is spent on education and different publicity, it does not all go into speed cameras."

Why don't you idiots learn? These safety cameras do NOT 'snare' people - they catch people who ignore the highly visible signs and the obvious markings. Why don't you start admitting this or change your name to the 'Preston branch of the road lobby'.

A sure vote winner, finally these cameras are being seen for the supplemental road tax that they are.
Shame the 2nd generation SPECS cameras are now coming into use.

Ken, you're wrong. Speed alone does not kill. Inexperience, incompetence inebriation and inappropriate speed together kill.
In any event, for a speed (sorry, safety!) camera to be installed there needs to be a history of fatal or serious accidents over a three year period. If there are no fatalities or serious accidents in a three year period does this mean the cameras are removed? - NO.

1 - These "safety cameras" increase erratic driving and are a hazard in themselves.

Are you really so naive as to believe these cameras are about "road safety"? And i suppose the lack of parking space has nothing to do with raising revenue from ticketing!?! so out of touch.

I'd be far more respectful of those smillie face signs than the dangerous speed cameras.

Speed cameras slow down vehicles whilst happy faces don't once they are established. The speedometers in the vehicles tell drivers how fast they are going. If drivers ignore this then what makes you think they are going to pay attention to a speedometer on the side of the road. There are a lot of law abiding drivers but we have to think about all the people who have had fines, they were all breaking the law!!! If someone you knew was run down by a speeding motorist would you be making the same argument?? I dont think so!!

The speed cameras in Preston have nothing to do with raod safety, They are revenue makers and nothing else.
The sighting of the cameras proves this if it was road safety orientated the cameras would be outside schools, hospitals and at accident black spots. Instead they are located mostly on wide open roads were drivers are tempted to go faster. The law is the law and i am not advocating speeding but the cameras are a farce. I was back in Preston in June and the cameras would appear to keep increasing in number.
I am thankfull that i do not drive in England any more.

Mr Smith.
The smily face serves as a reminder because decent motorists dont drive around looking at the speedo.
Any body would think that all road accidents are the result of speeding but more children are run over on estates at 10 mph than are ever run over busy roads.

Dont believe the lies used to defend these tax cameras.

"These safety cameras do NOT 'snare' people"

They also don't spot people without insurance, spot people who are drunk, spot people using hand held mobile phones, spot people on drugs, spot people with no MOT, spot people in stolen cars, spot people who don't bother using mirrors, spot people who pull out in front of other drivers at junctions, spot people who don't indicate, spot people with faulty brake lights, spot people with faulty headlights, spot people with bald tyres, spot people ignoring pedestrian crossings, spot people driving too fast in poor weather but within the posted speed limit, spot boy racers, spot people who use the wrong lanes at roundabouts, etc, etc ad infinitum.

Road safety is about so much more than speed limits, and GATSOs are enormously constrained in the benefit they offer. There are masses of other methods that can be used to improve road safety, sadly the current Road Safety brigade are represented by the likes of Long Live Speed Limits, so we are condemmed to cameras and little prevention of speeding due to their lack of intelligent, innovative thinking.

I know. Let's allow policy to be dictated by self-centred monomaniacs who wear a lead clog on their right foot.
