An area which locals claim has become a magnet for gay men to meet and have sex is to be part of a £500,000 revamp.
Pathways and cycle paths are planned for land close to Factory Lane, Penwortham, as part of a multi-million pound programme by Lancashire County Council to reclaim 300 hectares of derelict land by 2011.

Members of the public have until December 12 to comment on the proposals which will see a path for walkers, cyclists and horse riders along the former railway line.

Last month the Evening Post reported how mother-of-three Marie Cragg, 44, and her teenage daughter were shocked to see two semi-naked men acting indecently on a public footpath close to the site.

One local man, who did not wish to be named, contacted the Evening Post concerned the project would direct more people to the area for sex.

But the council has dismissed claims that the Lancashire REMADE project – which will provide a direct route into the Fishergate city centre car park from Preston Junction Local Nature Reserve and Penwortham Spar – would attract more indecent behaviour.

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said: "By creating a safer environment with things such as improved lighting and an upgraded route, it is hoped that the greenway will become a place that will be used more by cyclists and walkers and be a pleasant place to visit.

"The proposals, which we will be consulting the local community and police on, will seek to make the area an asset for the local community and deter any anti-social behaviour."

REMADE stands for REclamation and MAnagement of DErelict land. The project has been set up by the council in partnership with the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

Lancashire has over 2,400 hectares of derelict, under-used or neglected brownfield land made up of former industrial sites, quarries, old railways, disused reservoirs and tips.

An outline design by consultants Scott Wilson was on show at Penwortham Sports and Social Club, Leyland Road this week.

Good call. Improved lighting will certainly help. At least they'll be able to see what they're doing - and so will passers-by.

Everybody happy, then.

It's true, open up the place for wider community use and any indecent or antisicial behaviour is likely to reduce or disappear completely. And what is it with the LEP intentionally baiting people with their headlines?!

#3: Fear not, Dreddnought. The LEP is simply telling the truth about the area. Like it or not, it's known locally as a magnet for gays.

But REMADE? I think I'll call Lancashire County Council to see if they'll go into partnership to spend £500,000 setting up HOMOPATHS.

It stands for "HOw much MOney PAid To Hire conSultants."

While they're at it, they should reclaim the medieval cart track that doubles as the road outside my house and spend some money on that too. It hasn't been re-surfaced since 1948...

#4 - I guess if that's the case then it's fine that it's mentioned but surely the story is that local land is to be renovated for local people? The fact it's a hotspot for homosexual activity shouldn't be the angle (IMHO). There was another story on the site today, the headline for which was "Woman driver reverses into bank". That headline subsequently changed to "Driver reverses into bank" but originally it just seemed there to goad people. Why make issue of the fact it was a woman if not to get a reaction?

Shocking that your road is in such bad repair and for so long btw.

#5 total agree. the fact that gay men frequent this area is irrelevant. the good news is finally the park is getting the upgrade it deserves!

"Why make issue of the fact it was a woman...."

re the "...magnet for gay men to meet and have sex..."

okay, when they're caught name and shame them in the papers. remember what the mighty partrdige once said "God made adam and eve, he didn't make adam and steve."

I doubt for one minute that God comes into the equation, but if he does, then he also made Rasputin the mad monk, Adolf Hitler Osama Bin Laden Joseph Stalin Joe McCarthy Tomas de Torquemada (led the Inquisition)Pol Pot Mao Tse-tung Idi Amin Benito Mussolini, Robert Mugabe and Maggie Thatcher.
Doesn't do it that well does he?
