Preston are facing a midfield staffing crisis after being hit by injuries to Simon Whaley and Paul McKenna.
Whaley broke a toe just hours into Preston North End's training camp in Spain after a bizarre accident in his hotel room, while McKenna is to see a specialist later this week about a groin injury which has been troubling him for the past few weeks.
Manager Paul Simpson is now exploring the emergency loan market in the hope of bringing in replacements ahead of Monday night's clash with Southampton at Deepdale.
Explaining how winger Whaley came by his injury, Simpson told the club's website: "He got up during the middle of the night to go to the toilet in his hotel room and stubbed his toe on a coffee table with a marble top on it.
"The marble has fallen off the table and landed on his big toe which has left him with a fracture."
