Spurs supremo Daniel Levy missed out on Argentinian hitman Diego Milito when he refused to break the club's pay structure.
Real Zaragoza striker Milito, 29, wanted £65,000 a week from the Londoners, who were looking to replace Dimitar Berbatov with two new strikers.
Chairman Levy "really wanted Milito" and was confident about completing a £9million deal, the News of the World claims.
But once his wage demands shot past top earner Ledley King's £60,000 a week, Levy pulled out.
