A round-up of all the top football stories in Wednesday's national newspapers, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Celtic, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Inter Milan in the headlines.
THE SUN: Chelsea were last night rocked by news of Didier Drogba meeting Inter Milan. Also: Arsenal were left sitting pretty in pink last night thanks to match winner Nicklas Bendtner.

DAILY EXPRESS: Nicklas Bendtner spared William Gallas' blushes
with a fine late finish to see Arsenal into the last 16 of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Dynamo Kiev.

DAILY MIRROR: Didier Drogba's Chelsea career was on the brink last night with the Blues preparing to let the African go in a 30 million pound swap deal for Brazilian superstar Adriano. Also: Fernando Torres claims he wants to stay at Liverpool for life.

DAILY STAR: Cesc Fabregas produced a skipper's performance to book Arsenal's place in the Champions League last 16. Also: Didier Drogba is on his way out of Chelsea - after he was revealed to have opened talks with Inter Milan about a January move to Italy.

DAILY MAIL: Didier Drogba's controversial Chelsea career appeared to be coming to a close last night after it emerged that he met Inter Milan technical director Marco Branca and football's `Mr Fixit' Jorge Mendes. Also: Manchester United eased into the last 16 of the Champions League with a game to spare last night thanks to a fourth consecutive 0-0 draw against Spanish side Villarreal.

THE GUARDIAN: Not many players congratulate the manager who has just dropped them from the national side but Danny Cipriani believes Martin Johnson was correct to omit him from England's starting XV against New Zealand this weekend. Also: Just as William Gallas' reign as captain of this club had ended, his new dawn back among the ranks of Arsenal began with some unexpected friendly fire.

THE TIMES: Rafael Benitez has stated his intention to cement his place alongside Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley, the legendary Anfield managers, over the next decade as he prepares to rewrite the club's history books against Marseilles in the Champions League this evening. Also: This fraught night in northern Denmark for Celtic wasn't just freezing, but alarming, and ultimately disastrous.

DAILY TELEGRAPH: While a recession hangs over much of the world, Manchester City are preparing to embark on a spending spree that could see in excess of £100million pumped straight into the game in the January transfer window. Also: For all the new concerns, the song remains the same, "one-nil to the Arsenal".

THE INDEPENDENT: Fernando Torres has given Liverpool the clearest indication that nothing would be able to tempt him away from Anfield by admitting his pride at representing not only the club, but also the city, whenever he plays for Rafael Benitez's team.
