Preston North End boss Alan Irvine has revealed the top two on his summer shopping list – a left-winger and a centre-half.
But he admits he could be in the market for players in other departments if he loses anyone during the close season.

As things stand, Irvine feels he has sufficient cover for every position bar left midfield and at the heart of the defence.

He said: "Those two are where my priorities must lie at the moment.

"We do not have any natural cover on the left-side of midfield if anything happened to Lewis Neal.

"And we are going to be short at the back because Liam Chilvers looks like he will be out until December.

"I wouldn't want to go into the new season with only three central defenders."

Work has already begun to plug the holes and ideally Irvine wants to recruit before the squad returns for pre-season training on July 1.

He has accepted he will not be flush with money as he attempts to fill the two gaps.

The top priority is centre-half, a position the manager believes is a vital one in the Championship.

Chilvers' ruptured Achilles tendon has left him with just Sean St Ledger, Youl Mawene and youngster Neal Trotman.

With all three banned at least once last season – their combined card count was three reds and 25 yellows – Irvine feels it could be asking a lot for the trio to reach Christmas without at least one suspension or injury.

He said: "I think it is obvious we have got a problem at the back and it is one we might need to solve at this time.

"Of all the positions that you don't want to be left a little short in the Championship, centre-back is probably a key one.

"We have players who could fill in at a push. But it is certainly an area we need to look at.

"If Liam hadn't been injured I wouldn't even be considering it.

"But I don't feel you can operate with only three in that department for half a season.

"Centre-backs pick up suspensions really easily. All three of them have been banned last season.

"So it is a situation I really have to be concerned about and I have to try and do something about."
The left-side of midfield has been a problem position for some time, although Neal broke into the starting line-up in the latter weeks of the season and looked good.

Among others, Simon Whaley, a right-sided player, had been filling the role prior to that.

Irvine said: "That is the other position where we don't have any natural cover.

"We have had Simon playing out there at times, Chris Sedgwick has played there and, at a push, Callum Davidson and Matt Hill can also play there.

"But the only natural one we have is Lewis. So that is also an area we need to look at.

"Other than those two positions there is a balance to the squad.

"We are always looking to improve what we have got. But right now there is an urgency in terms of improving those two positions."

I would hope that Irvine is going to sign 1 if not 2 strikers as I'm sure Ormerod will be on his way and i don't think Hawley is up to it. As for the rest of the positions I agree that a winger is essential, though I'm sure Billy Jones could cover centre half in case of a suspensions/injuries meaning that we may not need a centre half.
It will interesting to see if Nicholls can get fit as I don't believe we have seen the best of him so far. If he can get fit then we have a good quartet of centre mids to call on in McKenna, Chaplow, Carter and Nicholls. Good cover at right and left back and 2 decent right wingers. The other positon that may need strengthening is goalkeeper as we may need and experienced back up to Lonners if Henderson does recovere from his injury.

Big Al is looking on the wrong side; Carter, Hill, Davidson, Neal and Whaley could play on the left wing. Sedgwick has even filled in.
However on the right wing we've got Whaley (bags of talent, good pace, poor attitude) or Sedgwick (little talent, no pace, good attitude).
If McKenna is going to remain a fixture in the middle (as looks likely) we will have little or no creativity and pace there, so we desperately need some injection of pace down BOTH flanks but I would say the right wing is a higher priority.
Still, AI has learned a lot since arriving at the club and I have faith in him getting it right for the new season.
Also, he cannot be serious about keeping Hawley and Ormerod so there must be some new striker(s) on the way too.

wrong post2, whalley cannot play on the left hand side- he has proved he isnt comfortable playing there and has been consistantly poor when put there. he is a right winger, nothing else

I think we do need a new striker but I would like to keep Hawley, I would also like to see Carter and Chaplow start in the middle.

Whaley has proved he can't play right wing either. He does actually like playing out left cos from that side he can shoot easier....His only REAL GOOD SPELL with us was as a 2nd striker not a winger - cos he shot a lot and some went in....

Al is only saying what his 'current' priorities are based on the gaps currently in the squad. As the likes of Nichols / Ormerod / Hill leave he will then replace them 'but he can't say their positions are a priority' without saying he wants shut.

As for Right side cover I think you'll find Anyinsah can cover and with Hart at RB so can Jones - so thats 4 players comfortable on that side...We actually don't have a FIRST CHOICE left winger as Lewis is only an option when all else fails.

should always play a player to his strengths, never play anyone out of position. Whaley, does have a good attitude (post#2) and can whip in a nice cross, but should be on the right. I'm concerned about the form of McKenna, and Hill when he plays, as both seem to give the ball away cheaply at times. I also agree with the earlier post about playing Chaplow & Carter in the middle - maybe they need a spell together to see what they can conjure up.

Either way, no matter what we all say, I have every confidence in Alan Irvine getting it right.
