Manchester City's bid to sign Mikael Silvestre from Manchester United may be scuppered by Arsenal.
Sources in London suggest that the Gunners are ready to make a shock move for the French defender.

Once it became clear that the Reds were willing to let the 31-year-old leave Old Trafford after nine years of service, Blue boss Mark Hughes had hoped he held the upper hand and that a £750,000 bid might land his man.

Now it seems the lure of Champions League football could sway Cheshire-based Silvestre.

Should the surprise switch take place then Sunderland will be doubly disappointed.

Black Cats manager Roy Keane, who had also expressed an interest in Silvestre, had a back-up plan that may well have involved a move for City's Michael Ball who, it seems clear, will now be staying put.
