Emergency crews were called to Moston Lane, in Harpurhey, Manchester, at 2.15am on Saturday following reports of an injured boy.
The victim had been stabbed once and was treated for a puncture wound but died on the way to hospital, said a Greater Manchester Police spokesman.
Detective Superintendent Shaun Donnellan said: "We are at the early stages of this inquiry, but we believe there may have been witnesses who could assist our investigation into finding out what happened."
