Manchester is one of nine areas in England named as pilots for a series of health initiatives designed to head off a looming epidemic of obesity.
Other areas taking part in Health Secretary Alan Johnson's "healthy towns" programme are Halifax, Thetford, Portsmouth, Tower Hamlets, Dudley, Middlesbrough, Tewkesbury and Sheffield.
Among the schemes trialled in the £30m programme is a loyalty card allowing people to earn points by buying healthy food and taking part in exercise.
