Poll: Illuminations

Poll: Illuminations

Lancashire is steadily climbing the ranks in a poll to find the top 101 things to do before you go abroad.

The poll has been launched by Visit England in a new Facebook App.

Anglophiles and industry experts from far and wide have been submitting and voting on their top English experiences, which will be whittled down to the top 101 to create the ultimate bucket list.

Here are just some of the Lancastrian suggestions that are in the running:

l Blackpool Pleasure Beach

Blackpool Pleasure Beach has been at the heart of English seaside fun since it opened in 1896. It is every bit an English icon as red telephone boxes and afternoon tea. The Pleasure Beach is bursting with action packed thrills from one of Europe’s tallest rollercoasters, The Pepsi Max Big One to the classic wooden Grand National.

l Watch the sunset over Morecambe Bay

The Morecambe Bay area encompasses a great many beautiful and interesting towns and villages including the Arnside and Silverdale area - designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Watching the sunset is described on the app as “simply stunning!”

l Blackpool Illuminations

The Blackpool Illuminations consist of almost every kind of light display you can imagine: lasers, neon, light bulbs, fibre optics, searchlights and floodlighting. Last year marked the centenary of the illuminations with more than 500 scenic designs and over 20,000 people there to watch the switch on.

lSkyWalk

The observation platform at the top of the Grade I-listed Blackpool Tower has floor-to-ceiling glass and overlooks the coastline. Stepping out onto the SkyWalk, 300ft above ground, involves treading across metres of glass and makes you feel as if you’re walking on air. Not one for the faint-hearted.

l Ballroom dancing

Blackpool boasts two magnificent ballrooms at The Blackpool Tower and the Empress in the Winters Gardens. Waltz your way around at your leisure whilst admiring the stunning décor.

Upload your suggestions of Lancastrian experiences online. Nominations must be made before March 1. Visit www.101thingstodoinengland.co.uk
