On your bike for charity ride
ride: Bailey and his bikers
A team of 14 cyclists are set to raise cash for a hospital which helped a little boy fight a tumour.
Bailey Simpson, eight, from Fulwood, was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive muscle cancer, when he was just eight-months-old.
He endured 18 months of intensive treatment and three years of follow-up treatment for the life-threatening illness at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, which moved from Pendlebury to Central Manchester in 2009.
Bailey is now a fit and healthy pupil at Sherwood Primary School, requiring just annual monitoring check ups.
Greg Simpson, Bailey’s dad, said: “The moment he was diagnosed our lives changed.
“But we knew Bailey was in the best place he could be.
“The hospital staff were amazing. We have so much to thank them for.”
The 14 Prestonians, called ‘Bailey’s Bikers,’ will set off from Whitehaven on May 20th and hope to arrive in Sunderland less than 40 hours later.
Greg added: “It’s going to be tough. But it’s small discomfort if we can raise a little cash for the hospital as a result.”
