Lost souls head into port
A LANCASTER writer and director is looking forward to a homecoming at the Dukes this week with his new play.
Andrew Quick directed and co-wrote Tales from the Bar of Lost Souls and is delighted to premiere the play in his home city.
"I'm excited and nervous really," he said. "I work at Lancaster University in the theatre studies department and I went to Lancaster Royal Grammar School in the 1970s and I saw a lot of stuff at the Dukes in the 1980s, so it is very exciting."
The play is a collaboration between Imitating the Dog, the National Theatre of Greece and the Cyprus Theatre Organisation – an exotic cocktail which is in keeping with the themes of the play.
"Because we did this collaboration we got to thinking what these three countries had in common, and they are all based on the sea economy," said Andrew. "We got thinking about ports and how they are big melting pots and we got started from there."
Tales from the Bar of Lost Souls starts in a bar in a Mediterranean port community where national borders and identities are blurred by the ever-changing mix of nationalities and commerce. Its beginning is also an end, when a dying man turns to a young woman and tries to put right a wrong committed many years ago.
The play is on at the Dukes, Moor Lane on March 18 and 19. Tickets cost 10-12 (concessions 8) and are available from the box office on (01524) 598500.
