Life in the slow lane suits mum
Mothertrucker Lyndsey Graham and son Dylan
Spending time with mum is no problem for Dylan Graham.
He just slips on his hi-viz jacket and clambers into the passenger seat of her 44-tonne truck.
And while she hits the road with a 40-foot trailer in tow, he enjoys the view.
For Lyndsey Graham, 25, it is the ultimate solution to spending time with her two-year-old son.
Forget that Lyndsey is already a little unusual in being one of the few females with a Class I licence.
That alone causes the jaws to drop when people spot her behind the wheel.
Having Dylan in the passenger seat only adds to their amazement.
Lyndsey, from Ormskirk, is almost an old hand, having been around trucks since her father set up his haulage business when she was just eight.
She said: “I used to jump in with him and go to Bradford on a run rather than going home after school.”
Even then Lyndsey admits that she was entranced by being in a truck.
She said: “I loved being high up and I still like that now. I feel like the queen of the road.”
She didn’t plan to become a truck driver and originally took a business qualification at Ormskirk College before starting a job in the office of her dad’s business.
But it didn’t last.
She said: “One day I asked my dad if I could have a drive around the yard in one of the tractor units and that was it - something happened. I just loved it.”
Within months she had qualified, passing both her Class II and Class I exams at the first attempt.
And despite what people might think, says she never experienced sexism or unpleasant comments from male truckers.
She said: “Sometimes they take the mickey if I’m having trouble backing into a bay, but the next day I could be watching them doing the same.”
Lyndsey can be seen in the Channel 4 series Mother Truckers which is screened on Thursdays at 10pm.
