Morecambe FC’s offering of pies has been crowned the best pie in Britain.

The half-time pies at the club must be a cut above the touchline refreshments enjoyed by most football fans.

The club’s chicken, ham and leek creations has been named supreme champion at the British Pie Awards.

Chef Graham Aimson, from the npower League Two club, was there to receive the award at St Mary’s Church in the traditional home of the pork pie, Melton Mowbray, in Leicestershire.

The annual competition is organised and hosted by the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association.

This year there were 619 pies entered, produced by bakers and butchers from across the UK.

They were judged by celebrity chefs, pie experts and top food writers including Rachel Green, Tamasin Day Lewis and Charles Campion.

Mr Aimson said: “I have been a chef for 15 years and I pride myself on the quality and taste of my pies. However, receiving this recognition by some of the country’s best food experts is an absolute honour.

“I know these awards are entered by the best bakers in the country. There was stiff competition so I am very proud of this achievement.”

Mr Aimson was crowned supreme champion from the winners of each of the 12 categories, and also won the Special Award to recognise small producers.

He won £1,000 for the honour.

Head chef Graham and his teammates sous chef Doug Fishwick and commis chef Sam Schofield, also recently won prizes at the Major International Football Stadia Awards.
