Death Force - Matt Lynn - 26/06/09

When a band of tough mercenaries is sent to war-torn Afghanistan, their mission is not quite what they had expected ...

This group of war-weary cynical ex-soldiers has tired of army games and the military life, and they are all in this 'godforsaken corner of the world' for very different personal reasons.

Ollie Hall, ex Household Cavalry, has long had problems with the demon drink and can't even afford to rent a morning suit for his wedding in six months time.

And ex-SAS soldier Steve West, who spent a hellish year in Iraq, just wants a big payday to enable him to realise his dream of owning a vintage car dealership.

Their 'employer' is a private military corporation called Dudley Emergency Forces but most of the men on the payroll call the firm Death Inc ... and it's best not to ask why.

Death Inc wants men, 'the desperate and the damned,' who can fight hard, dig their way out of any hole and they have to be in Afghanistan in less than a week.

All experts in their killing fields, the ten most ruthlessly efficient military mercenaries finally assemble in a whitewashed villa on the Bagram Road in Kabul to learn about 'the job' that will earn each of them a staggering three million dollars.

The first thing they have to do is forget about the rules the 'social workers who've moved into the Ministry of Defence have drawn up, and begin to fight like soldiers instead.'

So who is the mysterious enemy? It turns out to be the local opium baron, one Zabit Salangi, who is stashing fifty million dollars worth of gold and diamonds in a nearby village and who must be hit hard if the British Army are ever to beat the Taliban.

All they have to do is go out and steal his riches ... there will be maps, intelligence and any back-up they need but after that they are on their own and if they forget to work as a team, they are likely to end up dead on the desert floor.

Lynn's superbly realistic thriller is one of those good old-fashioned adventure yarns that sets your heart thumping and your mind racing.

With a well-drawn cast of characters and an all-action plot, you'll be hooked to the last page!
