Cyclists and walkers are set to benefit from a new cycle route through the Cuerden Valley.

Lancashire County Council has approved plans for the route which will link the beauty spot to surrounding towns and suburbs.

The plans were approved at a meeting of Lancashire County Council’s development and control committee.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “The proposed cycleway would be open to cyclists, walkers and wheelchair users.

“It is a key link in the national cycle route from Preston to Chorley.

“As well as linking the Cuerden Valley Park with Buckshaw Village, it is anticipated that people will use the path to cycle to work at Buckshaw Village, to the new Buckshaw railway station and into Preston.”

Several consultations have already taken place with neighbouring property holders, parish councils, Natural England and the Ramblers Association, but no objections have been raised to the plans.

A construction schedule has been set and it is hoped works will be completed by the end of October, in accordance with the grant requirements.

The work is expected to cost £80,000, made up of a £25,000 grant form the Lancashire Environmental Fund and a £55,000 contribution from the developers of Buckshaw Village.

The path will be maintained by Lancashire County Council although it is expected that costs will be minimal as part of the route runs along a footpath which is already maintained by the council.

The cycleway shares the footpath near the Clayton Hall Quarry for around 90 meters but no concerns were raised during the consultation process.

It is believed residents are keen to see the cycle route opened with several enquiring into the progress of the scheme.
