Rachel Hurst gives her mum a treat – a night out with a meal

It’s that time of year again when care, attention, gifts and love should be lavished upon the leading lady in your life.

Mother’s Day comes but once a year so, always looking for an excuse to treat my mum, I arranged tickets for a Mamma Mia tribute night at The Pines Hotel, Chorley, for my Mamma and me.

Scanning through the various evenings available such as Motown Magic, Totally Take That, Dirty Dancing, We Love the 90s and 80s Explosion, I thought the tribute act to the film based on the award-winning West End show would be perfect.

Calling up to pay and arrange the booking was fast, simple and the lady on the other end of the telephone was polite and helpful.

On arrival, mother and I made our way down the red carpet and into the cabaret and entertainment venue next to the hotel itself and were greeted with friendly and helpful staff who took our coats and showed us to the
table.

A short stop off at the bar and we took our table for two at the edge of the dancefloor surrounded by other couples, hen parties and families celebrating birthdays.

The ticket price of £26 each gave us three courses and the entertainment.

Choosing from a set menu we both opted for prawn cocktail to start while I went for chicken with mustard dressing on a bed of mashed potatoe for my main and across the table was salmon, again with mash, and a lemon and dill dressing.

The mains were also accompanied by a selection of vegetables.

The prawn cocktails were simple and un-showy but I would have preferred larger prawns instead of usual tiny pieces that are often offered at large catering events.

Mother dearest had glowing reports for her dishes saying, “the salmon was succulent and mashed potato was well seasoned” but the pudding – a “light and fluffy” vanilla cheescake – was “the favourite and added the menu “reminded her of a time when food was simple but tasty.”

My chicken dish was very moreish and had just the right amount of sauce so as to not take the flavour away from the meat which, as a supreme cut, was incredibly flavoursome.

And my dessert of summer berries and vanilla ice cream in a brandy-snap biscuit was polished off quick sharp.

I might have preferred the meal served during the show as there was a little bit too long of a delay between dessert and it starting but nothing could dampen a night out with my wonderful little mum.
