Honour After Honour - DT3 at The Dukes, Lancaster - 07/03/10

This fascinating new piece, written by Lancaster University German student Tom Markham, is inspired by and based on Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Using elegant, elegaic and highly literate verse and prose, Markham focuses on the conflicts between and dynamics of the main characters of the 'original' in an innovative and totally compelling manner.

If the approachable and vivid text can be considered a rare accomplishment from one so young, then so too was the powerful and exhilarating performance by a cast of 11.

With simple staging on three sides, the wonderfully versatile space of DT3 was used to fine effect. Writer Markham also directed, and demonstrated very clearly that he is also an assured master of all the usual directorial skills.

Leading the cast were the eminently-able Jon Coleman as Lord Lucius (Macbeth) and Charlie Hanson as Lady Lucius, the hero's wife. Soup, Spoon and Stew (the three witches played by Hannah O'Flanagan, Hannah Mook and Laura Johnson) delivered strong, chilling and savage performances, interlaced with some (necessary) comedy.

There wasn't a weak link in the cast, the production, or the text, and this is an achievement that local theatres, professional and amateur, don't always deliver.

This was a remarkable and memorable production of a first-class piece. I am looking forward to hearing that the playwright and some of his cast have gone on to greater things. This show was a real triumph.
