Neighbours told to keep noise down

MORE than 100 noisy neighbours have been handed notices ordering them to stop after thousands of complaints to councils in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

In the 12 months up to May this year, there were 1,573 complaints in Rotherham, leading to 55 abatement notices.

Figures for Sheffield show 1,488 complaints, leading to 35 noise abatement notices and one offender having equipment confiscated.

In Chesterfield there were 519 complaints but none required abatement notices or confiscations. Elsewhere in North Derbyshire, there were 261 complaints and one abatement notice in High Peak; 186 complaints, nine abatement notices and three confiscations in Bolsover; while Derbyshire Dales had 126 complaints and one abatement notice was issued.

The figures were revealed after a request under the Freedom of Information Act. No anti-social behaviour orders were made in any areas against offenders.

The Freedom of Information Act request was made by insulation firm Rockwool, which offers sound-proofing for homes.
