Forget book club, there’s a much tastier trend sweeping the county.

The South Lancashire Clandestine Cake Club met at Bean Drinking, Hough Lane, Leyland, on Sunday and the group is appealing for new members, particularly men.

The idea was devised in Leeds around 18 months ago and the popularity of programmes including BBC 2 hit The Great British Bake Off and former model Lorraine Pascale’s Baking Made Easy has led to around 20 branches springing up, with 1,000 members aged from 20 upwards.

And retailers including John Lewis and Lakeland have seen sales of traditional baking equipment increase.

Mother-of-one Jane Huntley, 37, from Leyland, said: “I think there is a resurgence of interest in baking at home.

“I think the cupcakes thing that’s come over from America is alongside the interest but we do whole, large cakes not little ones. You can make something really basic yourself and it’s a lot cheaper.

“We are looking for new people all the time, definitely men because we are not exclusively female but we tend to get a lot of women along.

“Everyone’s cakes are totally different from each other. It’s not a competition.”

The friendly group held its first meeting last August and has used cafes and pubs in Euxton, Chorley, Adlington.

Speaking of the secret element of the group, Jane, who runs a small business making celebration cakes, said: “Sometimes the clubs are run in people’s homes, it’s just the way it’s gone really.”

Club creator Lynn Hill said revealing the venue to members close to the event also helps make it exciting and intriguing.
