Ask the experts - making a simple pot

Ceramic artist Wyn Abbot uses a very simple method to make versatile and highly decorative pots. In this week's video guide on lep.co.uk she breaks the task down into easy-to-follow chunks which you can follow at home

Pottery dates back thousands of years and is probably the most versatile and fascinating natural medium around, with its ability to be formed and reformed into endless shapes and objects.

When the first pot accidentally or otherwise fell into the fire causing it to harden, our lives were revolutionised, enabling us to create functional ware for storing and cooking in addition to non functional and decorative objects.

Pottery has continued to evolve over the centuries with numerous glazes being developed, the potter's wheel introduced and various firing techniques and kilns.

Clay is part of everyone's life, we use clay-formed objects every day without really giving it much thought: the cups for our tea, washbasins in our bathrooms, even the buildings we live in are made from clay-formed bricks and tiles.

My introduction to sculpting started as a hobby and from day one I was hooked. I now run a business as a full-time sculptor and ceramic artist in Hornby, Lancashire.

As with most sculptors and potters I learned from mistakes as well as successes, but have found it rewarding, therapeutic and fun.

If you would like to try pottery most colleges and many studios offer courses and taster workshops which will also give you access to a kiln.

There are numerous techniques in pottery, not all require a potter's wheel, and many people, including myself, prefer handbuilding and

sculpting.

Whatever your preference, pottery is rewarding and enjoyable and the potential to create is as vast as your imagination.
