Personal trainer Paul Richardson reveals how to get a lot more out of your exercise regime.

In December a Chorley man bought his wife Sue a personal training voucher as a treat for her birthday.

The voucher included: consultation and goal setting session, body measurements, five one-to-one coached workouts, dietary breakdown and fitness and lifestyle plan for the month ahead.

Fifty-year-old Sue exercises three times a week to de-stress and maintain her figure.

Following a plan supplied by a gym instructor, she had noticed

her weight creeping up, and was losing motivation to workout.

Sue and I discussed her exercise routine, diet, and lifestyle.

We identified what was important to her (time, money, results),

and we established fundamental goals: to make exercise work, prevent further weight gain, tighten and firm her figure, and stay motivated.

Within 20 days Sue's waistline had decreased by three inches!

The key to Sue's rapid success was making her exercise work.

Like many of us, Sue sits down at work and has a busy family life, with limited time for exercise.

Her workouts were far too complicated, with numerous intricate movements.

Sue was burning no calories and wasting her time.

After our fourth workout, Sue had learned a dynamic, vigorous, and progressive workout: 10 minutes walking jumped to 15 minutes jogging, 15 minutes of bland bike peddling jumped up to 15 minutes of intervals on the elliptical.

She now uses all her muscles all the time; burning more calories, and boosting her stamina.

Her weights programme was simplified; always using several major muscles, from, where possible, a standing position, not

seated or reclined; improving balance, co-ordination, and core strength.

A major motivating factor for Sue was noticeable improvement: progression from walking to jogging, from plastic weights to bar- and dumbells.

Our bodies are designed to improve and adapt – the more you do, the more

you improve and overcome challenges.

Sue's programme allows her to increase the workload whenever she feels

capable.

Today Sue's workouts are quicker, more invigorating, and more effective.
