Ask the experts - painting with masking fluid

In a change to the schedule this week's video guide is painting daffodils using masking fluid, with professional artist and teacher Terry O' Toole. Next week we return to the theme of energy efficiency at home with Stuart Pye.

Anybody not painting or drawing is truly missing out on a wonderful hobby.

It is not only fascinating, but therapeutic and relaxing.

In fact, it is whatever you want to make it.

It can be a little frustrating at times if you are not getting the result you want.

But as long as you go with the flow, and accept you are going to make mistakes, you will get there in the end.

It's not all about the end result either.

As long as you enjoy the journey of learning to paint or draw you should have a fullfilling hobby or interest.

I remember a man who joined my painting class a few years ago said:

"I know Terry, I am not going to be the next Monet or Picasso, but if I can produce paintings good enough to put on my wall, I will be a happy man!"

I thought that was a healthy realistic approach for this gentleman, as it would be for most newcomers to painting.

Trying out different approaches to painting, trying out various techniques, trying out different medias if you like.

As Winston Churchhill once said:

"How varied are the delights which may be gained by those who enter hopefully and thoughtfully upon the pathway of painting."

Choosing a subject is another matter.

Some beginners spend too much time thinking about what to paint and don't get down to painting much at all.

I would recommend painting anything and everything. In other words, just get on with it! Paint an apple, paint a flower, build up to a bowl of fruit, or a vase full of flowers.

As you go along on this journey, you may want to settle on a favourite subject.

I have found my favourite subject matter, and that is painting scenes, such as woodland scenes, river scenes, interesting skies, including sunsets.

Terry runs painting classes for beginners and improvers in Preston, Lytham and is starting a new class in Garstang on April 7. Call 07969177369 for details.
