Ask the experts - framing a picture

Photography student Miranda Wright gives her tips on framing a picture

Many people think that framing and mounting prints can be tedious.

However, there are many reasons why you should seriously consider mounting any prints you have – mounting can protect your prints from fading and collecting dust.

Mounting and framing can be as individual as the print itself, and it can make that print you picked up as a bargain look very expensive.

A simple frame or mount can also turn a simple print into a lovely present for someone else.

Generally speaking, you will have bought a print which speaks to you personally, so you should do the same with the framing.

Why not make your own frames, which can be as simple or as intricate as you like?

Making your own frames means that you can get an exact match of materials with you furniture for example.

You'd be surprised how many people throw away old frames which could be easily transformed into the focal point of your room with a little TLC.

My favourite trick is to revive old wooden frames by spraying them with matt black paint (500ml can costs about 5 from a hardware store) to cover up any imperfections and give it a modern look.

To protect the print, I'd recommend also buying a "clip-frame" that has a Perspex cover, which you can use on your recycled frames (choose a clip-frame where the Perspex is around fingernail thickness so it can be easily cut with a knife if you need to, an A1 clip-frame would cost around 5 from somewhere like Wilkinson or JTF).

To mount your print in card, choose antique white because this colour doesn't interfere with the colours or tones in your print and can make it look more expensive and unique.

You'll need a cutting mat, (which can be bought from Granthams or Hobby Craft for about 5) and long metal ruler (which again can be bought from art specialist shops or even cheaper from a hardware store such as B&Q or Halfords) and a sharp knife (again can be bought from Halfords for about 4).

I'd also recommend working in a large, tidy space where you find comfortable.
