St Valentine has us reaching for roses and St Patrick for the Guinness, but our very own patron saint tends to get forgotten.
But Lancashire came over all patriotic yesterday as the county celebrated St George's Day 2008 and honoured the life of this brave Roman soldier – best known for his legendary slaying of a dragon.

In Preston city centre, members of the Royal Society of St George handed out 1,000 silk roses to the ladies of the city.

John Williams, North West area councillor for the society, was joined by volunteers on the Flag Market in honour of the day.

Mayor of Preston Christine Abram visited Asda in Fulwood, Preston, to mark the occasion, along with Morecambe and Wise impersonators, members of the Army and Navy, and even Bond girls complete with a 007 Aston Martin.

Children at Busy Bees nursery in Emily Street, Lostock Hall, near Preston, got into the spirit of the day by wearing red and white and making biscuits.

Nursery manager Kate Hartley said: "We made some England flags, had a traditional Sunday lunch and explained to the pre-school children what it is all about."

Meanwhile, dozens of people packed New Meadow Street Labour Club in North Road, Preston, for a day of celebrations.
