More than 100 speedy young runners fought it out to cross the line first in the Preston Primary School Cross Country race.
Pupils up to the age of 11, from 17 schools from across the city, entered the 1800m race at Preston Sports Arena, on Tom Benson Way.

The boys' race was won by Ryan Charnley, from St Andrew's Primary School, Ashton, and the girls' race was won by Katie Sharples, from Our Lady & St Edward's Catholic Primary School, Fulwood.

The boys' team winners were Fulwood St Peter's CE Primary School, after its pupils finished in sixth, eighth and ninth.

For the girls, the best team performance was from St Pius X Preparatory School, in Fulwood, after its pupils came in second, third and 15th.

Organiser David Simpson, 66, a retired teacher at St Peter's, said: "It gets them exercising and motivates them to keep fit.

"It was a lovely day and the conditions were ideal for running – it was just right."
