A package of rail improvements could see more reliable trains and better station facilities on a popular Lancashire line.
The South Fylde Line, which provides an hourly service between Preston and Blackpool South, has been designated a Community Rail Service by Government transport chiefs – one of just 21 routes across the country given the status.
It means the South Fylde Rail Partnership will work with train operators Northern Rail in a bid to improve the route.
The partnership is drawing up plans for the future of the line, which could see stations on the route given a mini-overhaul within three years.
It is also hoped to get the wider community involved.
A study will be conducted to find out how many people use the line, why people are not using it and how more passengers can be attracted.
The group will lobby the operator to ensure a share of new trains end up on the line – replacing current trains – when new rolling stock is delivered.
Partnership secretary Richard Watts said: "Things will remain very much as they are at the moment because plans take time to get funding and get taken forward."
