Two thugs shattered a teenager's jaw and nose before snatching the year's must-have computer game - Grand Theft Auto IV.
The 18-year-old and his friend were approached at the junction of Northbrook Road and Golden Hill Lane in Leyland just 30 minutes after buying the £40 video game, which was released at midnight.

The two offenders, white men aged between 18 and 20, overtook the man and his friend as they walked home and emerged from behind a hedge in front of them.

The first robber started punching the victim in his face.

As the second robber joined in the victim was knocked to the floor where they started kicking his upper body, shattering his nose and jaw and leaving him with cuts to his face.

They then snatched the game and ran away.

Police are today hunting witnesses and a teenage girl seen near the scene who may have been with the two attackers, though not involved in the robbery.

Det Sgt Claire Lancaster, of Leyland CID, said: "We would appeal for any witnesses to come forward to this horrific assault.

"We are also urging a girl seen near to the scene to contact us. She was wearing a distinctive light coloured padded coat with a fur trim, dark jeans and trainers and had a pontytail.

"Also we want to know if anyone is offered this game for sale in unusual circumstances."

The first robber was around 6ft 2in and of average height, with a shaven head and clean shaven face. He wore a dark tracksuit.

His accomplice was about 5ft 10in, clean shaven with shirt dark hair. He wore a dark tracksuit top and pants.

The controversial computer game, classified an 18, was launched worldwide at midnight and experts both sides of the Atlantic are predicting it will be the biggest seller this year.

One online gaming firm said it was selling 80 a minute and had taken on 90 extra staff to cope with demand.

The Leyland Blockbuster video store from where the game was bought, admitted they had sold more than 100 copies since it was released and the Preston store had sold around 70 - a high amount for a game of this type, according to a spokesman.

Anyone with information should call 0845 1253545 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

What a ridiculous time to release a video game.
The feral thugs that blight our towns are out hunting after midnight.
It is not safe to walk the streets in this country for fear of attack from scum like this.
Authority seems powerless to stop it.

once again the scum of preston are at it, hoodies, tracky bottoms, skin heads, face kicking what the hell is the world coming to these animals should be taught a lesson there is no punishment to match the crime, why did they have to harm the lad the way they did? it would not happen in china or saudia arabia. they know how to deal with scum like this.

Scum of Leyland, tpl. I have no doubt the perps in this case are some of the many benefit spongers infecting the town who also manage to afford PS3s, plasma tellys, personal number plates etc.

Angryman is also right though, stupid time to release the game.

Bits; What a stupid reply you posted.England is the armpit of Europe and Preston/Leyland the armpit of England and we ex-pats learn that from reading the endless reports of muggings on the LEP Internet pages.
Wow, you surely are a dumbo.

i moved away from preston to get away from the drugs and violence but its true no matter where you go you will always have this sort of behaviour its not the place we live in its the way the law is so laid back about this sort of thing and just does not give harder punishments,if i ad my way id get em caught and ship em out to iraq let em use theyre anger and thuggish behaviour out there and see what response they get!

thugs in tracksuits. pretty much sums up the problem we have in preston. these scumbags are no doubt well known to the police, but will probably get away with it due to difficulty distiguishing between them and all the other tracksuited thugs that prowl our streets. i think its time to round up all these little maggots, and implant them with trackers so their whereabouts can be traced back to their crimes. then severe punishment could ensue. i for one am sick of hearing of these attacks on good honest people. its time the streets were taken back and criminals PUNISHED. long jail terms. basic jail conditions. very basic

yet another youth crime that will be over looked with the blame on no job no money and if and i mean IF they will walk away with the cps not being able to make a case of it and the police throwing their hands in the air asking whats the point? bit like when a 14yr old kid robbing a car gets caught and they give him 8 points on his licence like they even own one in the first place...whats the point!!!

So far, the war in Iraq has cost more than WW11. Pull us out of there and use the money to build more jails. Sack the `What about their civil rights` judges and get ALL the scumbags behind bars. What about our (the victims of crime)civil rights?

Last night it was reported that someone had been given 200 hours unpaid community service, AFTER 40 PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS. Have we gone mad???? He should have been jailed after his FIRST offence.

The solution is easy. The problem is - the people in power just don`t have the guts to uphold the law.
