Judith dornan looks ahead to 53 Degrees' most packed calendar to date
Preston venue 53 Degrees has a sparkling year of entertainment lined up – and its managers say the next 12 months could be their best yet.

The concert venue has announced a host of high profile shows, including The Streets, on October 14, The Courteeners on September 29, Dirty Pretty Things on October 3 and dance maestros Dan le Sac and Scroobius Pip on October 18.

They've also got the best of up-and-coming talent with cutting edge New York dance band Iglu and Hartly on October 9, Oldham guitar rockers Twisted Wheel on September 18 and melodic indiers Sergeant on September 25.

Electro-disco shoegazers Friendly Fires play on September 29, noisy poppers Johnny Foreigner on October 2, and pop punks The Rifles on October 29.

There's cheery Scousers, Hot Club De Paris, on October 16 and hip hop star Roots Manuva on October 15. And there is the homecoming gig of the year on October 30 when Preston's Team Waterpolo return to their home city for the final show of their biggest headline tour yet.

For chart lovers, there's One Night Only. For nostalgia buffs, there's Bad Manners on September 19 or Stiff Little Fingers on October 8.

Emo rockers get Funeral For a Friend on October 23. For metallers, there is the Rockstar Taste Of Chaos Tour, this time around featuring Atreyu, on October 29.

Lovers of bands who are no more are catered for with top tribute acts, Whole Lotta Led, on May 9 and, on November 14, The Complete Stone Roses.

Our very own Lancashire Hotpots return to the main room for their Christmas show on December 20.

With 22 bands booked and more to come, it's the most packed autumn calendar the venue has seen in its three-year history and the next 12 months look to be very exciting for 53 Degrees.

The main room is to expand in capacity from 1200 to 1500. And you can now buy tickets for shows through their own website – visit www.53degrees.net and look for the link to Lancashire Tickets.

And they want to make the point that they are not just a student venue – most shows are fully open to the public, although many people do not realise this.

They hope the combination of greater capacity and great shows will bring in music lovers in droves.

Julie Cotton, 53's press liaison, said: "We are really proud of what we've got this year. There's a good mix of up-and-coming bands. And then there's big names like The Streets which is coming at a really good time with their album out this year. It will be the first chance for many to hear his new stuff so it is exciting."

The Streets is the latest high-profile gig at 53, following Ian Brown's recent festival warm-up show, The Coral's second gig back after their long absence and four-times Number One star Dizzee Rascal's sold-out gig.

Julie puts their ability to attract top acts down to their growing reputation on the live circuit. But there are always acts you dream of getting. Asked who she would be staging in an ideal world, Julie laughs: "Last Shadow Puppets, I'd love to get them!

For tickets to all of the above shows, call Students Union Reception on 01772 893000 or go to Action Records, Church Street, Preston, on 01772 258809. Or buy online at www.53degrees.net.
