Gemma Dee and Shaun Rae take a look at their unusual wedding setting
Preston DJ Gemma Dee and her fiance will make history next month by being the first couple to tie the knot on top of Blackpool Tower.
The 26-year-old, who co-presents Rock FM's breakfast show, visited the Lancashire landmark with groom-to-be Shaun Rae, ahead of the October 24 wedding.
Gemma said: "We always said we wanted our wedding to be completely different, but this is just something else. Imagine the stories we can tell our grandchildren.
"I was a bit overwhelmed when I found out. It's totally daft but that's me and Shaun.
"He must be daft to be with me."
The wedding venue was organised as part of a surprise by Gemma's breakfast show co-host Adam Catterall.
Although blessings have taken place on the tower before, no one has ever held the actual service at the top as the tower was not licensed.
But now couples will be able to request a wedding with a difference, although there will be a limit on numbers as ceremonies will require the closure of the tower top. There will be standing room for 120 people to watch the nuptials and even a person at the bottom of the tower with a walkie-talkie, should anyone turn up with a legal objection.
Gemma said: "It's hilarious that we've got to give enough time for someone to come up the lift and protest. I haven't got any skeletons in my closet and I hope Shaun hasn't."
Tower manager Geoff Sage, who announced on air that Gemma's would be their first wedding, said: "It is great for the tower and the resort that we have been granted the licence for tower-top weddings, and we can't wait to host the first ever legal ceremony.
"It is going to be a hugely momentous occasion for us, and for Gemma and Shaun."
