YES, that really was the Venezuelan conductor of Lancaster's Haffner Orchestra teaching the tricks of her trade to a TV legend on BBC2 last night.
Natalia Luis-Bassa, who regularly conducts concerts at the Ashton Hall, is the mentor of Starsky and Hutch star David Soul in the new series 'Maestro' – presented by Clive Anderson – where eight celebrities have to learn how to conduct an orchestra with the ultimate prize of performing in front of 30,000 people at the Last Night of the Proms.
Actor Jane Asher, drum and bass star Goldie, Blur bassist Alex James, broadcasters Katie Derham and Peter Snow, and comedians Sue Perkins and Bradley Walsh compete alongside Soul to be the Maestro.
In the first of six programmes, the celebrity students went on a week-long 'Baton Training Camp' where they had to face an orchestra for the first time.
