Pupils at Stonyhurst are celebrating another successful year of GCSE exam results with 89% achieving between A* to C grades, well above the national average of almost 66%.
The number of pupils who gained grades at A* or A has risen to 43% compared with 39% last year.

The Ribble Valley school saw 14 pupils gaining A* or A grades in nine or more subjects.

Results in science subjects, which are considered more difficult, were also good with more than half of the pupils getting A* or A grades in biology, chemistry and physics.

Ancient and modern languages also had successes with 51% of French, 55% of Spanish, 78% of German and 67% of Latin candidates being awarded an A* or A.

More than half, 57%, of candidates who took religious studies gained A* or A.

Headteacher Andrew Johnson said: "I was very pleased with these results. It was particularly encouraging that we have increased our A* and A grades, especially in the more difficult subjects."
