A UCLan student has defied the odds to gain a commendation in a national photography competition - despite never picking up a camera before.
Kelly Cliff's first attempt at professional photography saw her beat off professional and student photographers in the competition by the London Photographic Association.

The highly commended photograph was one of five the first year BA hons fashion promotion student had to produce, along with her fellow undergraduates, for her coursework.

The 19-year-old, from Cannock, said: "I was so shocked when I found out I'd done so well in the competition.

"I didn't think it was anything until I got a letter and then I just couldn't believe it. Before I came to university I loved playing around with photos but this was the first time I've ever done anything properly."

Eve Astle, lecturer in art and fashion, said: "This is such an impressive achievement for Kelly because it is a prestigious award in a competitive arena. This is the second year running we have been awarded and nominated in this particular competition."
