A former Guantanamo Bay detainee is to visit Lancashire.
Moazzam Begg, who has written a book about his experiences at the American camp in Cuba, will visit Leyland's Runshaw College on Thursday, October 19, to give a talk.

Originally from Birmingham, he was living with his family in Afghanistan in 2001 when he decided to move to neighbouring Pakistan and was arrested.

His book details his experiences in Pakistan and Guantanamo, as well as the way he claims he was treated by the American Government.

Those who claim to be defending the rule of law cannot suspend the rule of law in order to preserve it.

Guantanamo serves as a chilling reminder that the line between democracy and dictatorship is incredibly thin. For every suspect they incarcerated, this blatant injustice caused ten or twenty more to fill their shoes.

It is a matter of great shame for our New Labour government that they never stood up to the Americans over this, but instead colluded with extraordinary rendition and torture techniques like waterboarding.

I still reckon he did it.
