Organisers of a school gala struck gold when they decided to mark its 50th birthday with a bumper raffle.
For instead of the usual bottles of wine and boxes of chocolates, Ashton Community Science College has been bowled over by the top class donations for its golden jubilee prize draw.

The event, organised with help from the PTA, set out to get 50 prizes to be drawn at the Summer Spectacular Concert this week.

Local firms were asked to help support the venture and between them netted thousands of pounds worth of first-rate prizes ranging from a family Mediterranean cruise for four, and a weekend in Paris, to being a director for a day at Preston North End and trial flying lesson.

Headteacher at the Aldwych Drive school Mr Chris Likiss said:
"We have been overwhelmed by the support from both local and national businesses.

"This has enabled the school to organise a major raffle consisting of many fantastic prizes, the proceeds of which will be shared between our nominated charity and the school's PTA."

Money raised from the raffle will go half to PTA to fund extras for the students at Ashton and the other half will go to The Sir Tom Finney Alzheimer Appeal. Sir Tom helped support the event by joining pupils when they sold tickets in Preston city centre.

The draw will take place at the summer concert on Thursday, July 17.
